Hendrick de Meijer. Painted 1645.

Capture of Hulst, 1645, by Hendrik Meier, 1645. In the autumn of 1645 Dutch troops captured the town of Hulst in Zeeland Flanders. It was Stadholder Frederick Henry's last military triumph. He died in 1647. In fact, negotiations that would eventually lead to the end of the Eighty Years War in 1648 had already started at the time of the siege. Left, in the foreground, Dutch troops celebrate victory. The train of cavalry and coaches on the right, is the retreating Spanish army. The horseman in the centre is probably the young Prince William, later Stadholder William II, who had been present at the siege, accompanying his father, Frederick Henry.
