The Martyrdom of Saint Lucy — Meester van de Kruisafneming van Figdor
Meester van de Kruisafneming van Figdor. Painted c. 1505 - c. 1510.
After breaking off her engagement to a Roman consul to become a Christian, Lucy endured many tortures, yet she remained steadfast. She was eventually executed by the sword, as seen here. This panel was part of an altar dedicated to the saint.
From the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Currently on display in Christian art in the Netherlands, Main building, Middle Ages and Renaissance.
