Frans Jansz Post. Painted 1675 - 1680.

Frans Post spent eight years in Dutch Brazil. 35 years later, he was still painting the same ‘Brazilian’ scenes, including this one. The scene here is set against the backdrop of a meadow and features a cross between a church and a Franciscan monastery, reminiscent of structures found in coastal towns, such as Igarassu and Ipojuca in the Pernambuco region. Unlike the figures and buildings in his earlier works, the ones here are rendered quickly and crudely.

From the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Currently on display in 17th Century, Painting, Main building.
