The Avenue of Birches — Jan Hackaert
Jan Hackaert. Painted 1660 - 1685.
An elegant party has gathered to set out on a hunt, a sport traditionally reserved for the nobility and wealthy leisured class in the 17th century. The man and woman on horseback in the foreground are therefore dressed in the latest fashion. Hackaert subtly suggests how the light of a warm summer afternoon filters through the foliage and is reflected in the water.
