The painter Geertgen tot Sint-Jans lived in Haarlem in the monastery of the Sint-Jansheren (the Commandery of the Knights of Saint John), from which he took his name.The three magi represent the three generations and hail from the three continents known in the Middle Ages: Europe, Asia and Africa. They are paying tribute to the newborn baby Jesus.
From the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Currently on display in Christian art in the Netherlands, Middle Ages and Renaissance, Main building.
