Schildering — Gao Qipei
Gao Qipei. Painted 1700 - 1750.
A mountain ridge in a sea of cloud. Gao Qipei (1660 - 1734). China, c. 1700. Colours and ink on paper. Gao Qipei painted many of the album leaves of landscape scenes from nature. As a high-placed official he held various positions which entailed travel. Every few years he left Peking to visit a different administrative district. During these journeys he sketched the landscape. Inscribed on the left is the text: 'Piles of emeraldgreen amidst the clouds / this is a fair approximation. Pei Wei.'
