Mountainous landscape — Lucas van Valckenborch
Lucas van Valckenborch. Painted 1582.
Lucas van Valckenborgh (1535? - 1597). Mountainous landscape, 1582. This small landscape painting is unusual in that there is no story behind it. Almost all the surviving landscapes from this period are in some way depictions of a biblical or mythological tale. The rocky landscape is portrayed in a realistic manner. It is reminiscent of the area where the painter was born, near the river Maas. Purchased in 1892.
