Landscape with a Rainstorm Threatening — Barend Cornelis Koekkoek
Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. Painted 1825 - 1829.
These shepherds seem to enjoy a simple and peaceful existence in a wide meadow. However, the life of farmers and shepherds was harder in reality. Before 1850, artists did not paint outdoors: paint tubes did not yet exist, so working en plein air was impractical. Therefore, artists used sketches of what they saw to create landscape compositions back in their studio.
