Five Ladies in an Interior — Attributed to Dirck van Delen
Attributed to Dirck van Delen. Painted c. 1630 - c. 1652.
In a stately interior, five women are making floral decorations. In Dutch, they are known as ‘klopjes’: Catholic women who have taken an oath of chastity. Unlike nuns, ‘klopjes’ participated actively in society and many of them had careers in education. ‘Klopjes’ chose not to marry, giving meaning to their life in a different way
