This panel demonstrates the transition during the 13th century from the static imagery of Greek icon painting to a new expressive Italian style. It was painted either by a Greek (or Cypriot) artist in southern Italy, or by a southern Italian imitating the Greek style.
From the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Currently on display in Christian art in France, Germany and Italy, Middle Ages and Renaissance, Main building.
