Christ’s Second Visit to the House of Mary and Martha — Cornelis Engebrechtsz
Cornelis Engebrechtsz. Painted c. 1515 - c. 1520.
Here we are witnesses to a dramatic moment. Christ sits next to his mother, the Virgin Mary, in the house of the sisters Martha and Mary Magdalene, the latter of whom is seated at his feet on the floor. Both Marys - Jesus’s mother and his friend - are trying in vain to dissuade him from going to Jerusalem, where he will die on the cross.
