Theodoor van der Schuer. Painted c. 1666 - c. 1695.

Ceiling from the bedroom of Mary Stuart, painted by T. C. van der Schuer, 1678. The wooden ceiling is from the bedchamber of Mary Stuart, wife of Prince William III. The room was at the stadholder's residence in the Binnenhof in The Hague. In 1672 William and Mary had the stadholder's quarters refurbished. Mary would have seen the ceiling as she rose and retired to bed. Which is why it is decorated with mythological scenes reflecting the themes of dawn and night. The two main scenes are on canvas. In the first the goddess Aurora chases the darkness with her torch, flying ahead of the sun god Apollo. On the other side of the ceiling night approaches and Apollo is chased away by a female figure.
