Nicolaas Pieneman. Painted 1840 - 1845.

Investiture of King William II in the New Church in Amsterdam on 28 November 1840, by N. Pieneman. Sketch for a large painting produced by Pieneman for the Royal House. To the left of the king: his brother Frederick and his son Alexander. To the right: his sons William and Henry. In the background, centre: Queen Anna Paulowna with, left, her daughter-in-law Sophie (the wife of Crown Prince William),and right, her daughter-in-law Louise of Prussia (wife of Prince Frederick) and her daughter Sophie. On the table in the centre are a copy of the constitution, the crown, the orb and sceptre. Like the sword of state and the national standard these were especially made for the occasion.
