The cat at play — Henriëtte Ronner
Henriëtte Ronner. Painted c. 1860 - c. 1878.
A young cat plays with dominoes on a tabletop. At any moment an unexpected move could tip the ashtray with a burning cigar onto the ground – or worse. With this kind of endearing and amusing scenes Ronner became one of the most successful Dutch artists of her time. Her cat tableaux appealed to the sentimental love of her contemporaries for their pets.
