Hermanus Numan. Painted 1776.

This portrait captures the 23-year-old Susanna Mogge on the occasion of her marriage to the banker Hendrik Muilman. Behind her hangs the portrait of her first, deceased husband, the little girl’s father. Upon marrying Muilman, Mogge brought with her Haamstede Castle near Zierikzee and the Zeeland seigneuries of Koudekerke and Welland. Her blue gown and high-coiffed hairstyle allude to the festivities surrounding this wedding.
