Maria van Oosterwijck is portrayed here as a pious and accomplished artist. The palette and brushes allude to her profession, while the Bible symbolizes her virtue and piety. Van Oosterwijck’s flower still lifes garnered her fame at home and abroad. Her work could be found in the art collections of Emperor Leopold I, Louis XIV, and the English royal couple William III and Mary Stuart.
