Portrait of Maarten Mak — Attributed to Ishizaki Yushi
Attributed to Ishizaki Yushi. Painted c. 1800 - c. 1807.
Maarten Mak came to Deshima as a clerk in 1800 and was promoted to warehouse master. He probably commissioned this painting of himself as a memento of his time on the island. We can deduce from the balustrade that he is standing on the first floor of the playhouse. There was a billiard table on the ground floor and a reception room above it, where the staff often had drinks.
