Portrait of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba — After Willem Key
After Willem Key. Painted 1600 - 1699.
Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva. Copy after Willem Key, c. 1580. The successful general, the Duke of Alva (1507-1582), was dispatched by the Spanish king to the Netherlands to suppress the insurrection. In 1567 he was appointed governor. His repressive measures led to a mass exodus. From across the frontier groups tried to undermine Spanish authority by piracy and guerrilla warfare.
