Anonymous. Painted 1563.

The De Moucheron Family. Antwerp school, 1563. Pierre de Moucheron (1508-1567) and his wife Isabeau de Gerbier are surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Beside Pierre: his son-in-law and sons - oldest to youngest. The daughters are standing beside their mother, also oldest to youngest. Their ages are written above their heads. Pierre de Moucheron and his equally enterprising sons were active at the start of the Dutch Golden Age. Pierre founded a dynasty of Protestant merchants and ship owners. He ran a trading company in Antwerp. When the city fell to Spain in 1585, the firm moved to Middelburg. The towns of Zeeland and Holland profited immensely from the influx of wealthy refugees from the Southern Netherlands.
