Maritge Claesdr Voogt (1577-1644), Wife of Pieter Jacobsz Olycan, Burgomaster of Haarlem — Frans Hals
Frans Hals. Painted 1639.
Maritge Vooght grew up in a Haarlem family business of brewers. She married Pieter Olycan at the age of 18. Their union allowed him to hold high positions and he became co-heir to the brewery. In addition, they established a brewery of their own, which as was usual then, was registered under Pieter’s name. Their daughter Geertruyt successfully carried on the family business. That they were prosperous is evidenced by Vooght’s expensive clothing and precious church book.
