Left Wing of an Altarpiece with the Meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek — Anonymous
Anonymous. Painted c. 1510 - c. 1520.
These two panels were once the wings of a triptych that was probably made in Antwerp. The scenes are taken from the Old Testament. On the left, Melchizedek, king and high priest of Salem, receives the kneeling Abraham, patriarch of the Israelites, with bread and wine. Together with his army, Abraham has just returned from a victory against the eastern kings.
