Johan de Liefde (c. 1619-1673) played a key role in the capture of the English flagship, the Royal Charles, in 1667. In honour of the victory he received a gold chain with a commemorative medal. Van der Helst portrayed him in all his finery, wearing the chain. The background, with the battle, was painted by Ludolf Bakhuysen.
