Gaspar Fagel, grandpensionary, by J. Vollevens I. Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) held several important administrative posts in the Republic. In 1672 he succeeded Johan de Witt as grandpensionary of the province of Holland, a keyposition in the Republic's regime. Fagel was the right-hand man of Prince William III, who was appointed stadholder in 1672. Fagel is standing at a table on which are a number of boxes of seals. In the background is the assembly hall of the States of Holland.
