Following the refusal by the new sultan of Djambi, on eastern Sumatra, to recognise Dutch sovereignty in the East Indies, a military campaign was organised against him in 1858. The sultan's throne was declared forfeit and his kraton (palace) was captured. He fled inland. His successor agreed that in future Djambi would remain part of the Dutch East Indies and subject to colonial authority.
