Coastal Mountains — Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli
Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli. Painted 1870 - 1880.
Monticelli painted Le Promontoire here, Cap Canaille near Cassis on the French coast southeast of Marseille. The painter came from Marseille and so knew this region like the back of his hand. This light, impressionistic landscape is exceptional within his body of work. He specialized in dreamlike scenes with figures in a garden or forest, painted in dark and glowing colours. Monticelli’s work was very popular among European collectors.
