A Couple Making Love in a Park Spied on by Children — Adriaen van der Werff
Adriaen van der Werff. Painted 1694.
Rotterdam’s Adriaen van der Werff painted a game of glances here. The statue on the left gazes down at two little boys hidden behind a bush. In turn, they spy on a couple making love. Oblivious to the onlookers, the man grins at his lover. Completing the cycle, the woman, with a smile, gazes directly out at us.
